Chemiosmosis is the production of ATP due to osmosis of H⁺ ions.

The exact mechanism is theoretical. 

As you know, osmosis is diffusion through a membrane. In this case, H⁺ ions are what diffuse across a membrane. As they move, energy is extracted. 

This energy is trapped in ATP.
